There have been a few new charge points installed recently, all around the Ballacottier/Isle of Man Business Park area. We'll bring you the updates in three parts as each are unrelated.
Manx Utilities have made some changes to their public and fleet charging facilities. Due to an increase in demand by the public for their Ballacottier HQ charge points and the growth of the authorities' own EV fleet they have assigned four charging bays for public use and installed an additional set of charging bays for their own vehicles.
You will no longer be required to ask at reception to use the public charge points as these are now dedicated public points. However, due to demand on these points and spaces it's asked that EV drivers respect the new 2 hour, fair usage limit now applied. It's our understanding that signage has been erected to indicate the new limit. The two charge post have two 32 amp/7kw Type 2 (Mennekes) connectors and two 16 amp commando sockets. That's a total of 8 available points, but there are only four spaces. You'll need to use the appropriate cable for your vehicle. Take a look at our useful reference page.
The other charging bays are reserved for Manx Utilities vehicles only. It's great to see an increase in charge point availability here and the separation of public and private bays should make everyone's life easier.
It was great to see a line up of EVs parked up in pit lane from 2011 to 2018 Nissan Leafs to Renault Zoes and a VW Golf GTE.
A special thanks to Mr Ralph Peake MHK, Matthew Bawden (Department of Infrastructure) & Richard Bujko (Manx Utilities) for attending and updating us all on the direction the Isle of Man Government is taking, the creation of an EV sub-committee and a 5-year plan. We look forward to hearing more in the near future.
The meeting was kept as informal as possible and we heard some good points raised and excellent questions asked which sparked (pun intended) some discussion. We hope that everyone who attended found it useful and informative.
Due to the success of this meet-up it was agreed that another should be arranged to take place shortly after Manx Grand Prix. For the next meeting we hope to have an update from our Isle of Man Government representatives on their progress and we would like to encourage more non-EV owners and the EV-curious to come along to ask questions and learn a little more about owning an Electric Vehicle on the Isle of Man. It would also be great to get a wider variety of EVs and Plug-In Hybrids (PHEVs) to come along.

Any EV will be able to use the Charge Point. However, those equipped with a 3-phase on-board charger (such as the Renault Zoe, some Teslas) will be able to take advantage of the faster charging times.
We've added the point to our map, which is provided via PlugShare.
We'll post updates about the charge point as we get them.
Update: I had a quick drive by charge, the first time Zoe has been able to use a 22Kw charge point. It was a little slower than I thought but my battery was at around 66% when I arrived. The charger was easy to use with no apps or buttons to press, just plug and go. It's not that well signed from the road but there aren't that many places around there so I had no trouble finding it. There are two sockets but fitting in two cars side by side might be a squeeze without blocking access to the door which clearly states not to.
One word of warning, if you are fully charged at the top of Snaefell you wont have much re-gen capability on the way down so you'll have to use your brakes more than normal.
It was time for the clocks to spring forward last night so here is a timely reminder to check that your car will charge at the time you think it will!
Check your car's clock and charge timer and the climate timer if you use one.
From the MUA EV tariff webpage: "you [the bill payer] are responsible to ensure that your electricity supply switches at the appropriate time by carrying out regular checks of the switching times of the meter. "
So it's a good time to check that your Electricity meter has the correct time and has not 'drifted'. MUA domestic meters operate on GMT so the off-peak rate for the EV tariff is always midnight to 7 a.m. GMT. Now that we are in British Summer Time (BST) all appliances that use the off-peak electricity should have their clocks checked.
My new MUA electricity meter, the Elster AS230 Single Phase Meter, has a clock capable of changing itself to BST but by the look of this image it is not activated.
The meter provides 2 Daylight Savings dates whereby the clock can be advanced by one or two hours at the start of the summer and can be retarded by one or two hours at the end of the summer.
That is a quote from the Elster AS230's manual which states that It is also capable of operating as a Smart Meter but that capability is not activated either. One day perhaps!
Manx Utilities have installed a new public charge point in Market Square in Peel. This replaces much missed double commando unit at the Isle of Man Food Park. The new charge point is a Rolec post with two Type 2 connectors and the parking spaces are in a Disc Zone with a 2 hour limit.

There have been no new public charge points installed or upgraded since our last update but we do have news on repairs and faults.
Market Square, Ramsey
This charge point has now been repaired and is back to full working order. Remember that the parking disc restrictions apply in this car park. The square is also often used for events which means the charging bays may be inaccessible on occasion. It also appears that the repaired charge post no longer has the dumb blue commando sockets so you will need your Type 2 cable.
Isle of Man Motor Museum
These are still available to museum visitors. The four bays with the red signs are for Tesla cars only. The other two with white signs are for any EV (ask inside for them to be activated).
Please be aware that these have Type 2 tethered cables so will only work on vehicles with Type 2 charging ports. EVIOM had purchased a Type 1 to Type 2 converter to allow other vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf to be able to charge but the cable proved to be incompatible. Hopefully we can find a converted cables that is proven to work with Tesla destination chargers.
Chester Street Multistory
The two commando sockets here have been problematic of late. Manx Utilities have advised a damaged socket has been repaired but the last update states they are still having problems.
Unfortunately we're having issues as with these charging points, as they keep tripping out & we are unable to ascertain the cause at present
